Ahwatukee is part of the City of Phoenix. That one fact decides almost everything about how you get remodel debris off your property here, and it catches a lot of new homeowners off guard. Ahwatukee Foothills is not its own town with its own trash department. Your bulk trash rules come from Phoenix Public Works, and Phoenix changed the program to appointment only.
I run HaulOtter out of the Valley and I am in Ahwatukee constantly, from the older Lakewood and Mountain Park Ranch streets down to the new lots going in at Upper Canyon along Chandler Boulevard. Here is the honest version of what the city will take, what it will flatly leave at your curb, and when it is worth just calling somebody.
Ahwatukee bulk trash: 4 appointments a year, and you have to book them
Phoenix no longer runs the old “set it out during your neighborhood month” system. You now schedule each pickup:
- Four bulk collections per calendar year per household.
- Book online through the Phoenix Public Works bulk trash page, or call 602-262-6251.
- You can schedule as far as one year ahead. Most areas have openings within a couple of weeks.
- Cancel at least 2 business days ahead or that slot burns one of your four. Cancel in time and it does not count against you.
Placement rules matter just as much. One pile, no bigger than 10 cubic yards. Within 5 feet of the street or curb. At least 5 feet clear of any fixed object. Not on top of your water meter. Out by 5:30 a.m. on your date. And you may not combine piles with a neighbor: every household needs its own appointment.
The list that kills most remodels
This is the part people learn the hard way, usually the morning after the truck drives past. Phoenix bulk trash will not collect:
- Bricks, concrete, dirt, rocks, asphalt, and roofing shingles or tiles.
- Construction or demolition material over 25 pounds, or longer than four feet.
- Glass of any kind: windows, shower doors, patio doors, mirrors, fluorescent tubes.
- Metal or car parts over 20 pounds or longer than four feet.
- Household hazardous waste: paint, oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, batteries.
- Anything with refrigerant: refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners.
- Tires, any shape or size.
- More than 2 wooden pallets.
- Loose debris, litter, and ordinary household trash.
- Loose grass, leaves, weeds, twigs, and clippings (bag and tie them, or they stay).
- Tree trunks or stumps over 4 feet long or thicker than 12 inches.
Run a real Ahwatukee bathroom remodel against that list
Say you gut a hall bathroom. Here is what actually happens:
- Old toilet — fine. Toilets are on the city’s own example list of bulk items.
- Vanity cabinet — usually fine, it reads as furniture.
- Vanity mirror — rejected. Glass.
- Glass shower door and frame — rejected. Glass.
- Demo tile and thinset, three or four buckets of it — rejected. That is C and D material, and every bucket is over 25 pounds.
- Cast iron tub — rejected. Metal over 20 pounds.
- Cultured marble or stone countertop — rejected on both weight and material.
So the crew leaves you the toilet and the cabinet, and the heavy 70 percent of your remodel is still sitting in the driveway. That is the pattern in a kitchen tear-out too. The lightweight stuff qualifies. The stuff you actually need gone does not.
Hauling it yourself: the transfer station, and its two catches
Self-haul is a genuinely good option for a small job, and I will tell people to do it. Phoenix residential solid waste customers get one free ton per calendar month at the 27th Avenue or North Gateway transfer stations. Bring your city services (water) bill and a photo ID to the scale house.
Hours are Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday.
Two catches from Ahwatukee specifically:
- The drive. The 27th Avenue Transfer Station is roughly 20 miles from most of Ahwatukee, and a half-ton pickup holds maybe a cubic yard and a half of tile and drywall before you are over on weight. A modest bathroom is two or three round trips, which is most of a Saturday and a tank of gas.
- The cash deposit. If your vehicle plus trailer is over 9,000 pounds (with your water bill in hand), the scale house requires a deposit, and deposits are cash only — that is the bank’s rule, not the city’s. Residential deposits usually run $65 to $180. Showing up with only a card means you get turned around.
Also: your load has to be secured from the moment you leave the driveway, not just on the freeway.
It is monsoon season, so plan for storm debris too
Arizona monsoon runs June 15 through September 30, and Ahwatukee against South Mountain takes real outflow winds. Every August I pull split mesquite and palo verde limbs out of Foothills yards. If you want that on bulk trash, it has to be cut under 4 feet long and under 12 inches thick, and the small stuff bagged and tied. A whole downed tree is not a bulk pile. If it came down last night and you want it gone this week, do not spend one of your four annual appointments on it.

Heavy material like dirt, concrete, and tile, plus hot tubs, we quote on site first. That is not a sales trick — weight is what the landfill charges us on, and I would rather look at it than guess high over the phone. We do not take paint, chemicals, asbestos, tires with rims, or medical waste, and we run donation-first to Goodwill and Habitat ReStore before anything goes to the landfill.
New build in Upper Canyon? Budget for the box pile
Upper Canyon is filling in along Chandler Boulevard between roughly 19th and 27th Avenues, with model homes opening through 2026 and well over a thousand homes planned. Every one of those move-ins produces the same thing: a garage stacked to the ceiling with appliance cartons, furniture boxes, foam blocks, and pallet wrap. It is bulky and almost weightless, which makes it the cheapest kind of load we run. It is also exactly the “loose debris” the city will not touch. Flatten it, stack it, and clear the whole garage in one pass before your first monsoon storm turns it into confetti across the neighborhood.
Simple rule of thumb
Use city bulk trash for light and bulky: furniture, a mattress, a bagged yard trim, a toilet. Use a hauler for heavy, sharp, or scheduled: tile, concrete, glass, a full garage, or anything that has to be gone before Thursday. Between four appointments a year and a 10-cubic-yard cap, most people simply do not have enough city pickups to burn one on debris the truck will refuse anyway.
